I'm thinking..

...that art education needs a new bent. I wonder how we can make it more relevant to global issues without it JUST being about social justice.. ...As if that isn't huge enough...

I'm just thinking...

  1. As a student I want to be exposed to global concerns for that is something I talk to my friends, peers, teachers and parents about most. How is this world changing? Who is really in control? How can I (WE) make a statement. I have been noticing how much one can really speak to and about the nature of our humaness, our society, what our race has created, destroyed, obstructed, corrupted, betrayed, exposed, and hidden through art. The art is given to the audience to look at, to study, to read. It doesn't have to be a long essay or research paper filled with facts and scholarly quotes. It is real, it is an expression, a full length essay, thought, concept, atrocity, given visually. How can anybody ignore that? Maybe the average individual only spends five seconds looking at a work of art but in that time, something can be realized, the art may elicit some emotion, thought, perhaps that was long lost, and let it simmer.

Through education, expression, and communication a concept can be realized, the issue will be noticed. Awareness may finally cause humans to take time in the day to be active, for one to speak, discuss, and create.

  2. I'm so sorry I have taken so long to respond. I've read your post probably 5 times over these last months; it is SO reflective! And I SO agree with you. I just wrote a thesis that in part explored the parallels between language and art as expression of individuality as well as community. And postmodern art is everything you suggest in your post. Hallelujah!
